Best Shipping Container Homes Around The World

As we mentioned in our article on building a shipping container home, there are many people around the world who have brought this idea to fruition. For some it is a matter of values on sustainability and reducing impact on the earth, for others it is about reducing impact on their bank account. We’ve pulled together a few of what we think are the best shipping container homes from around the globe, from simple studios to glamorous family homes.

Ottawa, Canada

This container house was made by Joseph Depuis, a renewable energy researcher who wanted to create a cheaper alternative to wasteful, mainstream housing.

The entire project consisted of 3 recycled shipping containers, each costing just over $3,500, with a total cost of less than $30,000.

One container serves as a house for Joseph and his dog, and the other two are public workshop spaces available for the neighbourhood to use for projects and collaborations.

The house has a kitchen, shower, lounge room, fireplace and bedroom all in one area, with a separate toilet outside.

All electricity is powered by rooftop solar panels, including the heating in the floor.

The cabin is mobile and can be completely dismantled for transport to its next home.

Dallas, Texas, USA

This incredible abode, which is one of the best shipping container homes we’ve seen, was built by Architect Matt Mooney alongside his colleague, Michael Gooden, who works at the same firm.

Far from a “tiny home”, this building plan consisted of 14 shipping containers combined to form a single dwelling.

The house interior is 3,700 square feet with an extra 1,000 square-foot roof-top deck.

Materials used were maple, steel, and concrete.

Due to the hype around the community, the day the crane came to drop off the containers nearly 200 neighbours came out to watch! Some of them had doubts about the outcome but all were pleasantly surprised when the house was finished.

Ghent, Belgium

This house technically isn’t made out of containers alone, but rather accommodates them as separate living spaces within. The shell of the home is a large warehouse and there are three shipping containers inside, each with its own purpose including lounge space, entry way, and even a self-contained bed and breakfast.

Materials used were steel, concrete, and wood.

This Belgian couple lives here with their two children and love the modern, industrial aesthetic of their home.

Algarve, Southern Portugal

This small container home, named studio ArTe by its creators, serves a purpose even greater than a personal living space. It is designed to be a guesthouse with a message, its simplicity teaching each inhabitant how little we truly need to live, and live well.

The space is made using a 40 foot container, providing only a 320 square foot living area that includes a living room, dining room, and a bedroom in the main space, with a private, sectioned-off bathroom. The kitchen is outside, shared with residents of the main property.

To keep things cool, a tropical roof has been installed for air ventilation and shade, and glass sliding doors help the space feel larger and extend to the outdoors.

Mallorca, Spain

This beautiful container home is a multi-story building made from three, 20 foot shipping containers, providing a mere 104 square feet for living.

The ground floor holds a bathroom, kitchen and living room that extends to an outdoor patio, and the upstairs has a deck and a bedroom.

The house is self-sufficient with solar panels and rainwater collection fitted on the roof.

All in all, the house took only 6 weeks to build!

Auckland, New Zealand

Brenda Kelly of IQ container homes built herself her very own eco-friendly dwelling that went on to receive a shining, 8-star rating from NZ Green Building council. It’s sustainability rating and functionality make it one of the best shipping container homes we’ve encountered.

The house has a 40 foot shipping container providing her entryway, lounge area, kitchen, bathroom, and her bedroom, and an adjoining 20 foot container holds an office and a guestroom.

The entire living space is only 45 square metres so many aspects are multi-functional such as storage under the sofa, hideaway beds, and a portable wardrobe that doubles as a room divider.

All up, the tiny container home can sleep seven people!

Outside is a lovely 30 square metre deck to give Brenda more room for entertaining.

The green part of the building comes from the plywood walls, low-VOC glues and paints, solar panels on the roof, recyclable timber flooring, water run off used for laundry and toilet needs, and even a tiger-worm waste water break down system.

Total cost of this tiny, luxury container home was $122,000.
